Best Weekend Bag 2026: Comparison of 7 Models (Price, Capacity, Carry-On)

best weekend bag — sage green quilted corduroy weekend bag on a train seat by the window, autumn vineyards rushing past
✍️ Inès Morel 📅 November 3, 2026 🕐 18 min read

The best weekend bag holds between 35 and 45 liters, weighs less than a kilo when empty, and meets carry-on size requirements: of the 7 models we compared, the BOKABAS quilted weekend bag offers the best price per liter, Béis the best organization, and Sandqvist the best rain protection.

A weekend bag is the bag you grab on Friday evening for two nights at a friend's, a countryside wedding, or a train trip to the seaside. It needs to fit a change of clothes, a toiletry bag, a pair of shoes, and a sweater, fit in the overhead rack or cabin, and remain comfortable to carry between the station and your destination. On paper, all models promise the same thing. In reality, the differences are huge: prices vary threefold, as does weight.

For this comparison, on November 3, 2026, we recorded the price, dimensions, capacity, weight, and materials of 7 weekend bags sold in France for €65 to €149 on the brands' official websites. We included our own bags because it's what we do, but applied the same criteria to everyone, including their limitations. We chose brands we follow closely (Béis, Cabaïa, Herschel, Rains, Sandqvist): bags you actually see on trains and at airports, not models that are impossible to find. Our review isn't a lab test: it's a comparison of product specs, measurements, and uses, which we'll update whenever prices or collections change.

What is the best weekend bag in 2026?

There isn't one single best weekend bag, but a best bag for every use. For a weekend by train or car on a tight budget, the BOKABAS quilted bag (€65, 40 L, 560 g) offers the best value. For rain and cycling, the Sandqvist Stream. For keeping everything in its place, the Béis Weekender.

Here's our ranking, based on six measurable criteria (detailed below) and typical use for two or three nights:

  1. BOKABAS, quilted or velvet weekend bag (€65 to €69): the best value for price, capacity, and weight, with prints you won't find anywhere else
  2. Sandqvist Stream Weekender Bag (€149): the largest (49 L), very lightweight and water-resistant
  3. Béis The Weekender (€114): the best organized, with a bottom compartment for shoes
  4. Cabaïa Duffle Adventurer (€120): the most versatile, it can also be worn as a backpack and comes with a lifetime warranty
  5. Rains Hilo Weekend Bag (€79.90): the cheapest waterproof bag in the comparison
  6. Herschel Novel Duffle (€120, often discounted): a classic with a shoe compartment

This ranking gives greater weight to price per liter and weight, because those are the two factors that make the biggest difference on a short weekend trip. If your priority is rain protection, carrying a laptop, or a long warranty, the order changes, and we'll tell you frankly on each bag's product page.

The comparison table of the 7 weekend bags

The table below summarizes the data published by each brand on its official website, collected on November 3, 2026. Price per liter lets you compare bags of different sizes: it's simply the price divided by the stated volume.

Model Price (11/3/2026) Volume, weight, price per liter
BOKABAS quilted cotton 65 € 40 L, 560 g, €1.63/L
BOKABAS corduroy 69 € 40 L, 700 g, €1.73/L
Sandqvist Stream Weekender 149 € 49 L, 600 g, €3.04/L
Béis The Weekender 114 € 42 L, 1.67 kg, €2.71/L
Cabaïa Duffle Adventurer 120 € 40 L, 1.34 kg, €3.00/L
Rains Hilo Weekend Bag 79,90 € 36 L, weight not listed, €2.22/L
Herschel Novel Duffle €120 (list price) 43 L, 1 kg, €2.79/L

↔ Swipe the table on your phone to see everything

A second, more practical table: each bag's dimensions and its main feature. Dimensions are given in the order width × height × depth when the brand specifies them that way.

Model Dimensions Key feature
BOKABAS (cotton or velvet) 55 × 30 × 25 cm Price, lightweight, 18 colors and prints
Sandqvist Stream 55 × 45 × 20 cm Water-resistant, 16" laptop
Béis Weekender 45.4 × 40 × 25 cm Bottom compartment, luggage sleeve
Cabaïa Duffle Adventurer 45 × 30 × 29 cm Backpack straps, lifetime warranty
Rains Hilo 52 × 27 × 26 cm Waterproof fabric, low price
Herschel Novel 52 × 30 × 28 cm Shoe compartment

↔ Swipe the table on your phone to see everything

Two notes for reading these figures. First, Herschel was offering discounts on certain colors that day (€83.99 to €101.99 instead of €120): we kept the list price for a fair comparison, but the Novel becomes a very good buy at those prices. Second, Rains doesn't list the Hilo's weight on its product page, so we didn't make one up.

Our method: the 6 comparison criteria

We rated each bag on six criteria that a customer can check herself on the product page or with a tape measure. None of the criteria is based on an impression or advertising.

  1. Price per liter: list price taken from the brand's website, divided by the stated volume
  2. Empty weight: every gram the bag weighs is one less gram for your belongings, especially with airlines that weigh carry-on bags
  3. Cabin size: dimensions compared with Air France’s (55 × 35 × 25 cm) and easyJet’s large cabin bag (56 × 45 × 25 cm) dimensions
  4. L's organization: inside pockets, shoe compartment, laptop pocket, luggage sleeve
  5. Rain resistance: waterproof, water-repellent, or untreated fabric; waterproof closures
  6. Carrying comfort: hand handles, shoulder carry, shoulder strap, backpack straps

A seventh criterion matters a lot to us but can’t be measured: style. We haven’t rated it. We’ll simply tell you what each bag looks like, and you can decide which one looks like you.

To put this comparison in the context of a wider range of options (suitcase, backpack, wheeled bag), our guide to choosing a travel bag covers all sizes, from a small overnight bag to a large checked bag.

1. BOKABAS: the quilted cotton and velvet weekend bag

The BOKABAS weekend bag is a large, soft-sided duffel measuring 55 × 30 × 25 cm with a 40-liter capacity, available in two materials: quilted cotton at €65 (560 g) or quilted corduroy at €69 (700 g). It’s the least expensive and one of the lightest in this comparison, with the widest choice of colors.

We know it by heart, of course, so we’ll try to be just as demanding with it as we are with the others. Its strength is the balance between price, lightness, and capacity: 40 liters is enough for three nights in summer or two nights in winter with a thick sweater. The one-centimeter padding offers a little protection for the contents and gives it that soft, cushioned feel you notice when you pick it up. It can be carried by hand or over the shoulder thanks to two long webbing handles sewn all around the bag, which distribute the weight well.

  • Price: €65 (quilted cotton), €69 (quilted corduroy)
  • Capacity and weight: 40 L, 560 g (cotton) or 700 g (velvet)
  • Storage: one large pocket, one zipped inside pocket, one open inside pocket (cotton), one open outside pocket
  • Care: delicate wash at 30 °C (cotton: machine or hand wash; velvet: hand wash), dry flat
  • Colors: 12 cotton prints (Cerise, Saucisse, Léopard, Guépard, Marie, Valentine…) and 6 velvet colors (sage green, navy blue, terracotta, raspberry pink, sky blue, khaki green)

Its limitations, now. Cotton and velvet aren’t waterproof: in a ten-minute shower between the train station and the hotel, it’s fine; in a full day of Breton rain, it’s not. It has no removable shoulder strap, shoe compartment, or padded laptop pocket (a laptop slipped into a sleeve fits without a problem, but it isn’t protected by the bag itself). Finally, stock is limited: only a few pieces remain in each print, sometimes just two.

The Cerise quilted weekender bag: 40 liters for two nights, 560 g when empty

Who is it for? People who mainly travel by train or car, want a lightweight, attractive, washable bag, and would rather spend €65 than €150 on luggage they use a few times a year. Velvet is more suited to fall and winter: it's warmer to the touch, dressier, and the one people are most likely to choose as a gift in December.

2. Sandqvist Stream Weekender Bag

The Sandqvist Stream Weekender Bag is a large travel tote measuring 55 × 45 × 20 cm, with a 49-liter capacity, and retails for €149. It is the most spacious bag in the comparison and, relative to its capacity, the lightest (600 g according to the brand), with water-resistant fabric and waterproof closures.

The Swedish brand designed this bag for the city as much as for travel: it looks like a very large, understated black tote bag, with reinforced handles that can be fastened together with a snap button and a strap for carrying it over the shoulder or crossbody. The main compartment fits a laptop up to 16 inches, and the exterior pocket closes with a YKK Aquaguard zipper, designed to limit water ingress.

  • Price: €149 (retail price, 3/11/2026)
  • Capacity and weight: 49 L, around 600 g
  • Highlights: water-resistant, 16" laptop compartment, shoulder strap, 2-year warranty
  • Drawbacks: the highest price in the comparison, 45 cm tall (too large for Air France's size allowance), few interior pockets according to the product details

Who is it for? People who get around by bike or on foot in all kinds of weather, carry a laptop, and want a single bag for work and weekends. If you’re looking for color or a warm-feeling material, this isn’t the one.

3. Béis The Weekender

The Béis Weekender measures 45.4 × 40 × 25 cm, holds 42 liters, and costs €114 on the brand’s European website. It is the best-organized bag in the comparison, thanks to a bottom compartment that fits shoes or a toiletry bag and folds away to free up the full capacity.

Béis, the American brand launched in 2018, has made this bag its flagship product. It’s easy to see why from the product page: a sleeve for sliding it onto the handle of a rolling suitcase, a key clip, a laptop compartment, padded straps, and a clip closure. This is the bag for people who like every item to have its place. The downside is the weight: 1.67 kg when empty, three times as much as our cotton bag. That matters on a flight where carry-on luggage is limited to 8 or 10 kilos.

  • Price: €114 (Béis European website, 3/11/2026)
  • Capacity and weight: 42 L, 1.67 kg
  • Strengths: bottom compartment, suitcase sleeve, laptop pocket, padded straps
  • Drawbacks: the heaviest in the comparison, sponge-clean only, 40 cm tall (outside Air France's size limit, within easyJet's large cabin bag limit)

Who is it for? Organized travelers who often fly with a rolling suitcase and want a bag that clips onto it. Less suitable if you carry your bag on your shoulder for a long time.

4. Cabaïa Duffle Adventurer

The Cabaïa Duffle Adventurer is a travel bag measuring 45 × 30 × 29 cm, with a 40-liter capacity, and sells for €120. It can be carried by hand, over the shoulder, or on your back thanks to its straps, and the brand offers a lifetime guarantee: it is the most versatile of the seven.

The French brand is known for its interchangeable pom-pom beanies and colorful backpacks. Its duffle bag carries on the same idea of colors and city names (London, Le Havre, Reykjavik…). When it comes to features, it is very well equipped: shoe compartment, pocket for a laptop up to 14 inches, coated water-repellent fabric, and a MOLLE system for attaching pouches. The product page says it is accepted as a carry-on by many airlines; at 29 cm deep, however, it exceeds Air France's strict size limit by a few centimeters when full.

  • Price: €120 (3/11/2026), 12 colors
  • Volume and weight: 40 L, 1.34 kg
  • Strengths: backpack straps, shoe compartment, 14" laptop compartment, lifetime warranty
  • Drawbacks: heavy when empty, 29 cm deep, sporty rather than urban look

Who is it for? Those who alternate between walking, trains, and planes and want to be able to carry the bag on their back for a long walk through a station. The lifetime warranty is a real selling point if you keep your bags for ten years.

5. Rains Hilo Weekend Bag

The Rains Hilo Weekend Bag measures 52 × 27 × 26 cm, holds 36 liters, and costs €79.90. It's the least expensive waterproof bag in the comparison, made from the coated fabric that made the Danish brand famous.

Rains takes its name from raincoats, and it shows: the Hilo is made from a fabric with a smooth, slightly matte feel that withstands downpours and wipes clean with a sponge. The design is minimalist, with no frills, in understated colors. It's also the smallest of the seven, with a 36-liter capacity: perfect for one or two nights, but a little small for a long winter weekend.

  • Price: €79.90 (3/11/2026)
  • Volume and weight: 36 L, weight not specified by the brand
  • Strengths: waterproof, easy to clean, low price for a waterproof bag
  • Drawbacks: smallest capacity, synthetic appearance, simple interior organization

Who is it for? Budget-conscious travelers who mainly want a waterproof bag for short weekends, especially in rainy regions. For more space in the same style, Rains offers a Large version for €109.

6. Herschel Novel Duffle

The Herschel Novel Duffle measures 52 × 30 × 28 cm, holds 43 liters, and weighs 1 kg; its retail price is €120, but several colors were on sale for €83.99 to €101.99 on November 3, 2026. Its advantage: a separate shoe compartment, accessed via a side zipper.

The Canadian brand has made the Novel one of its best-known models. We like its practicality: a pair of shoes (or sports gear) stays separate without soiling clothes, and the main zipper is described as waterproof. At 28 cm deep, it's a little too bulky for the strictest cabin-size limits, but it fits easily in a car trunk or on a train luggage rack.

  • Price: €120 (retail price), €83.99 to €101.99 on sale depending on the color (3/11/2026)
  • Volume and weight: 43 L, 1 kg
  • Strengths: shoe compartment, waterproof zipper, good price when discounted
  • Limitations: 28 cm depth, sporty style, high regular price

Who is it for? People traveling with a spare pair of shoes or workout clothes who want to keep them separate from the rest. Look out for discounts: at under €90, it climbs significantly in our ranking.

Which weekend bag should you choose for your needs?

The right weekend bag depends first on your mode of transport, then on the weather and what you’re bringing. Here are our recommendations for each type of traveler, based on the seven models compared.

You mostly travel by train or car

On trains and in cars, nobody weighs or measures your luggage. Weight and price matter more than size, and a soft bag fits anywhere, whether above your seat or in the trunk. The BOKABAS quilted bag is our top pick here: 560 g, 40 liters, €65, and machine washable after it’s been dragged along a platform. The velvet version does the same, with a warmer style for winter.

You’re flying with just one cabin bag

When flying, dimensions and empty weight are what matter. Bags measuring 55 × 30 × 25 cm, like ours, fit Air France’s size limits; taller bags measuring 40 to 45 cm (Béis, Sandqvist) are better suited to easyJet’s paid large cabin bag allowance. For this situation, our cabin travel bag guide explains airline by airline what fits and what doesn’t.

You cycle or get around in the rain

For cycling or getting around a rainy city, choose a waterproof fabric. The Sandqvist Stream and Rains Hilo are the only two waterproof bags in this comparison; the Cabaïa is water-repellent, so it handles raindrops but not a prolonged downpour. The Sandqvist has the advantage of a shoulder strap, which is safer on a bike than carrying a bag by hand.

You’re bringing a laptop

For a weekend that starts at the office on Friday, you’ll need a dedicated pocket. Sandqvist (up to 16"), Cabaïa (14") and Béis have a laptop pocket. With BOKABAS, Rains or Herschel bags, slip your laptop into a padded sleeve before packing it.

You want a bag that lasts ten years

If longevity is your priority, check the warranties: Cabaïa offers a lifetime warranty on its products and repairs them when possible, while Sandqvist offers a two-year warranty. Other brands provide the statutory warranty. A well-maintained bag lasts a long time, whatever the brand, but a written warranty gives you extra peace of mind.

Weekend bag and cabin baggage: what really makes it through

A weekend bag can go in the cabin if it meets the airline’s maximum dimensions, including handles and pockets. For most major airlines, the benchmark is around 55 × 35 × 25 cm; low-cost airlines often only allow a small bag that fits under the seat for free.

The good news is that a soft bag is more forgiving than a rigid suitcase: if it isn’t full, its depth decreases and it fits the sizing frame. The downside is that a 45 cm-tall bag doesn’t get any shorter. So before you buy, compare your bag’s largest dimension with the largest dimension allowed by the airline you fly most often.

  • Air France: carry-on baggage up to 55 × 35 × 25 cm, plus one personal item
  • easyJet: free small bag measuring 45 × 36 × 20 cm under the seat, large bag measuring 56 × 45 × 25 cm as an add-on
  • Bags in this comparison: BOKABAS (55 × 30 × 25 cm) fits Air France’s size limit whether empty or full; Béis and Sandqvist fit in easyJet’s large cabin bag allowance

Rules change regularly and vary by fare: always check your airline’s baggage page before you travel. We keep our complete carry-on baggage guide up to date with each airline’s dimensions. And for an overnight stay with a bag under the seat, take a look at our selection of small travel bags.

Which material should you choose for a weekender?

A weekender’s material determines three things: its weight, rain resistance, and style. Coated synthetic fabrics offer better water protection, while cotton and corduroy are lighter or warmer and easier to wash.

Polyester and coated fabrics

This is the material used by Béis, Cabaïa, Herschel, Rains, and Sandqvist. Thick polyester, sometimes coated with polyurethane, resists abrasion well and repels water. It holds its shape, giving the bag a more structured look. The trade-off is that reinforced versions are heavier, and many models aren’t machine-washable: just wipe them clean with a sponge.

Quilted cotton

Quilted cotton, the material used for our €65 bag, is soft, lightweight, and gentle to the touch. The padding cushions minor bumps, and the bag is machine-washable at 30 °C. It isn’t waterproof: it’s a choice for comfort and style rather than adventure. It also lies flat in a closet, unlike a rigid bag.

Corduroy

Quilted corduroy is the warmest material in this comparison. It’s a little heavier than cotton (700 g for our model), dressier, and develops a beautiful patina. Hand-wash it in lukewarm water. It’s our pick for fall and winter weekends, and for gifting.

What about leather?

Leather is heavy, expensive, and needs looking after. None of the bags compared are made of leather; Sandqvist offers a version for €599, outside this comparison’s budget. Watch out for product descriptions that call a synthetic material “leather”: faux leather cannot legally be called that.

How to pack your bag for 2 nights without overstuffing it

For two nights, a 35- to 40-liter bag is enough if you roll your clothes, pack smaller items in pouches, and wear your bulkiest pieces. The secret comes down to one rule: bring just one extra pair of shoes in addition to the ones you're wearing.

We do the test every time we leave: here's what fits in a 40-liter bag for a two-night weekend in the fall, without forcing the zipper closed.

  1. Two tops and a light sweater, rolled rather than folded
  2. A pair of pants or a skirt, in addition to what you're wearing
  3. An outfit for the evening, rolled in a cloth bag to prevent creases
  4. Underwear and pajamas, in a pouch
  5. A pair of shoes, with the soles in a shoe bag
  6. Your toiletry bag, medium-sized, with liquids in travel bottles
  7. Your charger, headphones, and a book, in the inner zip pocket

Pouches make all the difference: they save you from emptying your bag to find a sock, and you can transfer them straight into a drawer when you arrive. A toiletry bag with a plastic lining also protects your clothes from leaking bottles. If you're flying, our airplane toiletry bag guide covers the 100 ml rule and what you can take through security.

Giving a weekend bag for Christmas

A weekend bag is a popular Christmas gift because it already hints at a trip. To give one, expect to spend between €65 and €150, depending on the brand. Choose a color the person already wears and slip a toiletry bag or a little note announcing a getaway inside.

It's a gift people often wrap in December, for example for a partner, a sister, or a dad who travels a lot for work. Velvet is especially popular this time of year: it feels like a gift, it's soft, and it doesn't look like the sports bags you see everywhere. To avoid getting it wrong, take a look at the person's bags and coats: someone who loves black and beige will feel more at ease with a solid-color bag (navy blue velvet, khaki green, black Sandqvist or Rains), while someone who loves color will prefer a print.

Two ideas to make the gift more personal: fill the bag (with a toiletry bag, a regional guide, or a lightweight throw) or tuck in a train ticket for a weekend together. For more travel inspiration, we’ve gathered our gift ideas for travelers.

Caring for your weekender bag

A weekender bag should be cared for according to its material: delicate wash at 30 °C for quilted cotton, hand-wash for corduroy, and a sponge with soapy water for coated fabrics. In all cases, empty it, shake it out, and leave it to dry flat, away from a radiator.

Before washing, close the zippers and turn out the pockets to remove any sand or crumbs. For cotton, a delicate machine cycle in a pillowcase or mesh laundry bag is enough; avoid a high spin speed, which can flatten the padding. For corduroy, use lukewarm water and a mild detergent, then dry flat, reshaping by hand; once dry, brush gently in the direction of the ribs to lift the pile. Coated fabrics from Rains, Sandqvist, or Béis should be cleaned with a damp sponge, without using a washing machine, to avoid damaging their finish.

  • Quilted cotton: machine-wash at 30 °C on a delicate cycle, dry flat, never tumble-dry
  • Corduroy: hand-wash at 30 °C, dry flat, brush gently once dry
  • Coated polyester: sponge and mild soap, air-dry
  • Storage: flat or filled with paper, in a dry place

One last tip: store your bag with a lavender sachet or a piece of soap so it smells fresh for your next trip. For more on sizes and uses, our men’s travel bag guide rounds out this comparison with other luggage styles.

In summary

The best weekender bag isn't the same for everyone. Here's the key takeaway from our comparison on November 3, 2026:

  • Coziest for winter and gifting: BOKABAS velvet, €69
  • Largest and most water-resistant: Sandqvist Stream, €149, 49 L
  • Best organization: Béis The Weekender, €114
  • Most versatile with a lifetime warranty: Cabaïa Duffle Adventurer, €120
  • Cheapest waterproof bag: Rains Hilo, €79.90

FAQ: The best weekender bag

What size bag do you need for a 2-night weekend?

A 30- to 40-liter bag is enough for two nights. Below 30 liters, you have to pack very light; above 45 liters, the bag becomes bulky and heavy to carry. Our weekender bags hold 40 liters, the size we recommend for two or three nights.

What is the best weekender bag brand?

There is no single best brand. In our comparison, BOKABAS offers the best price per liter, Béis the best organization, Sandqvist and Rains the best rain protection, and Cabaïa the longest warranty (lifetime). The right choice depends on how you travel and your budget.

Can you take a weekender bag in the cabin?

Yes, if its dimensions meet the airline's requirements, often around 55 × 35 × 25 cm. A soft bag measuring 55 × 30 × 25 cm, like the BOKABAS weekender bag, fits Air France's size allowance. Budget airlines often charge extra for carry-on luggage of this size.

How much should you budget for a good weekender bag?

Budget €65 to €150 for a good branded weekender bag. Below that, the quality of the stitching and zippers often drops; above that, you're mostly paying for a material (leather) or a brand. In our comparison, the seven models range from €65 (BOKABAS) to €149 (Sandqvist).

Which weekender bag should you give as a Christmas gift?

For Christmas, a velvet or printed bag makes a better gift than a gym bag. Choose a color the person already wears, and add a matching toiletry bag or a ticket for a getaway. The BOKABAS velvet weekender bag (€69) comes in six colors.

How do you wash a fabric weekender bag?

A quilted cotton weekender bag can be machine-washed at 30°C on a delicate cycle, then dried flat. Velvet should be hand-washed, and coated fabrics can be cleaned with a sponge. Always avoid the tumble dryer, which damages the padding and finishes.
